The Loppersum pumping station is located at the end of the Lopster Wijmers and the beginning of the Westeremdermaar, right next to the N996. The pumping station and the adjacent lock were built in 1991 to compensate for the relative rise in water levels due to soil subsidence caused by natural gas extraction.
The pumping station drains the area that is roughly situated between the Eemshavenweg, the Delleweg, the railway line, and the road from Garsthuizen to Loppersum.
