Marten Toonder was a Dutch comic strip author. He became known as the writer and illustrator of Olivier B. Bommel and Tom Poes.
Many of the sayings from the stories have become part of the Dutch language.[10]
Some of the most used neologisms are: boss, thought framework, supermarket, nincompoop, and soul pincher. New expressions include:
troubles and woes
if you know what I mean
a simple yet nutritious meal
come up with a scheme!
In 1992, at the age of 80, Toonder received the Tollens Prize for his entire oeuvre.
On May 2, 2002, in honor of his 90th birthday, the statue Ode to Marten Toonder was unveiled at the Binnenrotteplein in Rotterdam next to the Blaak Station there.[11] The bronze and granite statue is 6 meters tall and was designed by the artists' group the Artoonists.
