The Leuvense Poort was one of the five city gates of the fortifications in 's-Hertogenbosch in the city wall that was built before 1225. Although most of the Leuvense Poort was demolished in 1813, part of it can still be recognized.
The city wall of 1225 surrounded only the immediate vicinity of the Markt, about nine hectares. In later centuries, a new wall was built that enlarged the center to about one hundred hectares. Since then, the Leuvense Poort is no longer in use as a city gate.
The gate was demolished by order of Napoleon, because he could not easily get through it with his armies. Before the gate was largely demolished in 1813, it had other functions, including that of a prison. Part of the north tower remained standing during the demolition; this is located in the buildings in front of the corner with the Korte Waterstraat.
An image of the gate can be seen on the corner of Hinthamerstraat and Rozemarijnstraatje.
