Moerasdraak was the nickname of 's-Hertogenbosch during the Eighty Years' War. The city received the name because it was considered impregnable due to its location near a swamp. 's-Hertogenbosch is situated lower than the surrounding areas, causing many waterways such as the Dommel and the Aa to converge at 's-Hertogenbosch. This also created the marshy lands around the city, such as Het Bossche Broek and the Moerputten.
Maurits of Nassau attempted to take the city in 1601 and 1603, but failed due to the swamp surrounding the city. Frederik Hendrik succeeded in overcoming the moor dragon during the Siege of 1629. The city lost its nickname in this defeat.
