Swamp Dragon was the nickname of 's-Hertogenbosch during the Eighty Years' War. The city was given the name because it was considered impregnable due to its location near a swamp. 's-Hertogenbosch is lower than the surrounding areas, so that many watercourses such as the Dommel and the Aa meet at 's-Hertogenbosch. This also created the marshlands around the city such as Het Bossche Broek and the Moerputten.
Maurice of Orange had tried to take the city in 1601 and 1603, but due to the swamp around the city, this failed. Frederick Henry did manage to overcome the swamp dragon at the Siege of 1629. The city lost its nickname in this defeat.
