Doesburg (Low Saxon: Doezebarg) is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland with 11,621 inhabitants (1 April 2011, source: CBS). The city is located along the Gelderse IJssel and the Oude IJssel. The municipality of Doesburg is part of the Arnhem-Nijmegen City Region. Doesburg received city rights in 1237, a year later than nearby Doetinchem. Due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Oude IJssel and the Gelderse IJssel, Doesburg has long been an important fortified city. Doesburg was one of the five voting cities within the States of the Zutphen quarter. Doesburg also had an important economic and administrative function as capital of the Richterambt of Doesburg. The Martini church with its 94 meter high tower still bears witness to the prosperity of the time. Due to all kinds of causes, including the silting of the IJssel, prosperity in Doesburg declined after the 15th century.
