Moerkapelle

Description

In the northern part of the craft Zevenhuizen were the "Wilde Veenen". These were detached from the rest of the craft (village) in the fourteenth century and leased. Around 1400 there was first talk of habitation here. The place was named after the chapel.

A final split between Zevenhuizen and Moerkapelle came in 1645, when Jonkheer Warnaert van der Wel bought the "Wilde Veenen" from the lords of Zevenhuizen. He drained the peatlands here so energetically that the 'Honderdmorgenpolder' was already completed in 1655. The resulting agricultural land brought Moerkapelle the necessary prosperity: in 1667 the old chapel was replaced by a church.

A defining feature of Moerkapelle is the church built on an elevated site. The construction of this Reformed hall church probably started in 1662 and was completed in 1667. Above the entrance in the tower are the family coats of arms of Daniël van Hogendorp and his wife Ida Maria Hooft in a carved relief. In the tower hang two bells, one cast probably in 1757 by Johannes Specht sr from Rotterdam and the other in 1707 by Quirijn de Visser Willemszoon. Special about the interior is the pulpit and the wooden Renaissance choir gate that comes from the Sint-Laurenskerk in Rotterdam. The church was last restored in 1952 - 1955 where the interior was modified and from 1994 - 1995 where mainly the exterior was restored.
