The name Moerkapelle originated from the presence of a small church or chapel by the marsh. The origin of the village is linked to the history of the polder De Wildeveenen. The drainage of this polder in the 17th century led to economic activity (agriculture) and people settled in Moerkapelle. However, even before the drainage in the mid-17th century, there was already habitation. The hamlet 'Op Moer' emerged around 1400.
