Jansgeleen, or as the current, but incorrect name goes Saint-Jansgeleen, is the name of a historical location between Geleen and Spaubeek. The estate and its annexes derive their name from the former House or Castle of Spaubeek, which was traditionally called Lord Jans Geleen or Lord Johans Geleen. The history of this important fief on the northern edge of the South Limburg hilly country seems to have been entirely forgotten, since -- and also partly due to -- the rise of the mining industry in the Western Mining Region around Geleen-Lutterade.
