The Chaamse Bossen are located between the Gilze-Chaam road and the village of Alphen. The area measures 1,324 ha and is owned by the Forestry Commission.
The area once consisted of sand drifts and wet heathland with several fens. Many of these heathlands were reclaimed between 1900 and 1934 and wooded with mainly Scots pine. The area was drained and areas that were too wet were converted into grassland. This is where the forest owes its surprising variety. However, the vegetation of the area is poor and consists, especially along the paths, of heather vegetation.
