The name Bronkhorst was first mentioned around the year 1000 when a descendant of Bruncharus, the first Count of Hameland, is said to have founded a settlement with this name. Bronkhorst has had city rights since 1482.
The town has been set up systematically at the foot of the castle of the lords of Bronckhorst. Among the most important surviving antiquities are the chapel and a few houses with stepped gables, as well as some dwellings with woodwork in the outer walls. The castle, city walls and the city moats have disappeared.
