The Blokhuispoort is a building complex that served as a prison in the city of Leeuwarden until December 2007. The current building was constructed in the second half of the nineteenth century on the site where a prison already existed around 1500. The Blokhuispoort is located at the southeast corner of the old city center. Over the centuries, it has undergone many modifications and expansions and has served as a prison since 1580. In its current form, the complex is 130 years old and has 180 cells. The Blokhuispoort could no longer meet the contemporary safety requirements for a penitentiary institution and would need to be renovated for €15,000,000.
