Park Huize Olterterp.
It is a park that has been laid out in the landscape style, as Friesland knows it from the famous garden architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard. On this 5.5-hectare estate, it Frijske Gea has its home.
(the park Huize Olterterp, around the office of it fryske Gea on the Aldhof in Olterterp is freely accessible on the paths).
The nature manager's own estate.
Like an old lady of rank, It Fryske Gea lives in the country house in the beautiful park in Olterterp. It looks as if the famous Redbeard designed it. An undulating relief, winding paths, the pond and the hill. There is no evidence that Redbeard, who lived from 1782 to 1851, actually worked here. If this is the case, the park should have been built a few years after the construction of the first castle in 1793. This castle, owned by the Van Boelen family, was faded in 1907 by the current country house. In the meantime, the beeches – with which the brown beeches that used to synbolise the Twelve Apostles of the garden – have grown into large trees that accentuate the lines of the park. The rhododendrons have become large shrubs. The fact that it is now an old forest is appreciated by various bird species that nest in the hollows of trees. Tawny owl, nuthatch and hawfinch are examples of this. In the hollows of the old beech trees there is also a colony of jackdaws. The barn owl inhabits a nest box that has been placed in an outbuilding especially for him. The grass snake can also be found in the park, as does the hazel worm. As befits a good host, It Fryske Gea puts the mown grass in heaps. In this sweltering lawn grass, the grass snake spends the winter and lays its eggs.
