The Hoge Veluwe National Park is located between Arnhem, Ede and Apeldoorn. It is a national park because the state recognizes the national significance of the area and guarantees its protection. The entrances to the park are located in Hoenderloo, Otterlo and Schaarsbergen. The park is now approximately 5,400 hectares in size and covers about five percent of the Veluwe, the largest lowland nature area in Northwest Europe. It consists of forest (3,200 ha), heathland (2,100 ha), drifting sand (60 ha) and fens. There is a great diversity of plant and animal species.
Originally the area was wooded, but in later times local shifting sands have arisen. To capture the drifting sands, coniferous trees were planted by the government from about 1850. When the drifting sands threatened to disappear as a result of reforestation, an area was deforested in the middle of the park to preserve all kinds of nature that have ever been in this area.
On De Hoge Veluwe there is room for cultural-historical elements, architecture and visual art. For example, the world-famous Kröller-Müller Museum is part of the park.
