St. Bonaventure Church anno 1892
This church was built between 1890 and 1892 to a design by Nicolaas Molenaar, a pupil of P.J.H. Cuypers. It has become a neo-Gothic cruciform basilica. The slender tower with a remarkably high needle-pointed roof and four corner turrets, together with the city tower and the windmill from a great distance, determine the skyline of Woerden. The architecture of the exterior is very detailed. The interior is richly decorated with the coloured tiles on the floor, a marble high altar, side altars, a Marian or day chapel with a wrought iron railing from 1894, a marble baptismal font, stained glass windows (including three from 1919 by F. Nicolas), statues of saints, bundle pillars with natural stone capitals, cross rib vaults. The church was restored in the nineties of the last century.
