The village of Maasbommel was a flourishing Hanseatic town in the Middle Ages, earning the nickname 'Pike City' because fishing brought a lot of wealth to the population. The place had no less than two castles and also had its own mint; tolls were also collected on the Maas. Due to the changing course of the Maas, it now lies near the recreational area de Gouden Ham.
The high water level of the Maas 1 to 2 times a year causes a lot of inconvenience, particularly at the campgrounds in this area; one campground has been replaced by floating homes. After the unprecedented severe flooding in '93 and '95, a complete dike reinforcement project was initiated. Furthermore, it became barely possible to realize construction plans outside the dikes. By designing floating villas that can rise with potential high water levels, permission has now been granted one last time to build outside the dikes.
