The Roman Railway was part of the limes, which is the designation for the border of the former Roman Empire.
The limes ran from the North Sea along the Rhine and Danube to the Black Sea. More to the east followed the limes of the Euphrates (from the time of Emperor Septimius Severus the Tigris); in the south, the Sahara formed a natural border that made its own demands on the national defence.
The photo shows a reconstructed watchtower, of which there were once about 20 in the Netherlands along the limes.
