From 1800 onwards, the endless heathlands were gradually cultivated into cultivated land and forest. From 1900 to 1940, mining intensity intensified. As part of the provision of work, the fens and other low parts were closed with sand from high heads By widening and deepening the stream the Bijloop, the area was drained. When Brabants landschap was able to acquire the estate in 1970, only about 100 ha of wild land remained. By gradually taking agricultural land out of lease, we were able to excavate several disappeared fens again from 1995, such as the Lokker, the Flesch and the Bak. Many rare plants returned from the underground seed bank: blue knot, tar guichelheil, marsh deer and pill fern are just a few examples. The Lokker in particular is a true bird paradise with, among other things, water ral, robin and small plover.
