The IJmuiden Locks form the connection between the North Sea Canal and the North Sea at IJmuiden.
The lock complex consists of the South Lock from 1876, the Middle Lock from 1896, the North Lock from 1929, the Spuisluizen, and the Pumping Station. To the west of the locks lies Forteiland, part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam.
For many years, the North Lock was the largest lock in the Netherlands and Europe. Due to the increase in the size of ships, this lock has now become a bottleneck for shipping to the Port of Amsterdam. The municipality of Amsterdam would like a new, even larger, fourth sea lock to accommodate the growing shipping traffic. The desired year for the opening of this lock is 2016; the dimensions of the lock will be 500 meters long, 65 meters wide, and 18 meters deep.
