The scientist Rembert Dodoens is also buried in this church. Born in 1517 in Mechelen, he died here in Leiden in 1585. He was both a physician and a physician. Dodoens' first important contribution to botany was that he started looking for and describing plants himself. This resulted in a huge increase in the number of species described. He described about 1340 species himself, of which about 600 were new. In his Cruydeboeck of 1554, he resolutely breaks with tradition by no longer classifying the plants alphabetically, but according to their external characteristics. This was of enormous importance for biology. In this way, he established a systematic framework in which the plants could be placed.
