Nieuwersluis originated in the 15th century near the 'new sluice' that was constructed at that time between the Vecht and the Nieuwe Wetering. Due to its strategic location by a sluice and along a heavily navigated river, it became an important link in the Old and later New Dutch Waterline. Fort Nieuwersluis and the Willem III barracks still remind us of this military past. The barracks is now a women's prison. Visit the lovely antique shop De Galanterie or relax for a moment on the terrace by the water of restaurant Het Stoute Soldaatje. Guests can moor their boat here. (non-guests can dock their boat on the other side, on the south side of the bridge) Or take a Waterline stroll around Fort Nieuwersluis. A beautiful half-hour walk with information boards providing details about the Waterline along the way. The start of the walk is at the beginning of the village, across the bridge and to the left.
