It is one of the main avenues of the Rivierenbuurt, with Rooseveltlaan and Vrijheidslaan all converging towards the Victorieplein. It is also perpendicular to Ferdinand Bolstraat, which runs through the Pijp district along a north-south axis. It was developed as part of the "Plan Zuid" created by Hendrik Petrus Berlage in 1915 and approved by the city in 1917. Known as Noorder Amstellaan until 1946, it was notably used by German occupiers on May 10, 1940, before being used by the Allies during the liberation of the city and taking its current name in the aftermath of World War II.
