Klein Zwitserland is a nature reserve along the Utrechtseweg within the built-up area of Amersfoort that is part of the Utrecht Hill Ridge.
It is not known who came up with the name Klein Zwitserland, but it is not hard to imagine why this part of Amersfoort was given this name: this forest is located on top of the Amersfoortse Berg. It is a morainic hill, formed during the first ice age.
Within the area lies the highest point of Amersfoort, the Galgenberg (44 m above sea level). In the past, those sentenced to death were hanged here. This served as proof that Amersfoort had a strict judiciary and that one better behave. The Galgenberg is now designated by the municipality as a dog off-leash area (?).
