Het verhaal van de bevrijding van Apeldoorn begint hier: in de nacht van 16 op 17 april 1945 slopen Albert van de Scheur en Gijs Numan over dit sluisje naar de Canadese bevrijders en wisten te voorkomen dat de stad onder Canadees vuur kwam te liggen. Apeldoorn ontsnapte aan een hevige artilleriebeschieting vóór de beslissende aanval over het Apeldoorns kanaal.
