The history of the Oude Kerk dates back to around 1250, when Amsterdam was just a small settlement by the Amstel. Besides being a place of worship, the church was also an important meeting place for traders and theatrical performances were held there. Whenever the city experienced a period of economic prosperity, the church was renovated and beautified. In the tower (built in the 16th century) hang 39 bells, and the carillon is one of the most beautiful in the country. The large bells, one of which dates from 1500, hang right at the top. In the church, you can see the tombstone of Saskia van Rijn, Rembrandt's first wife. Other attractions include the tomb monuments of famous naval admirals, a beautiful organ, and a pulpit from 1640.
