The quadrupling of the population in the 17th century was also accompanied by a lack of hygienic provisions, leading to many diseases such as cholera, plague, and tuberculosis. Thus, 3 out of 4 children of Rembrandt died within a few months. Their graves are located in the square behind the Zuiderkerk. His wife Saskia also died at a very young age (29). Her grave is in the Oude Kerk, in the first niche to the left of the organ. Additionally, his later companion Hendrickje, his son Titus, and his daughter-in-law Magdalena also died prematurely. They are buried together with Rembrandt himself in the Westerkerk.
