The Sint-Urbanuskerk is a Roman Catholic church on the Noorddammerlaan in Bovenkerk, in the municipality of Amstelveen in the Dutch province of North Holland. On Saturday evening, September 15, 2018, the church was largely destroyed by a fierce fire.
The Sint-Urbanus was designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers. Construction began in 1875 and the church was consecrated in 1888. It is a three-aisled neo-Gothic hall church with transept. The church has a more than 65 meter high hexagonal tower. Cuypers chose this design to connect the main entrance to the road. The church itself stands at an oblique angle on the Noorddammerlaan, because the main altar and thus the axis of the church were, as was customary at the time, oriented to the east. The tower bears a resemblance to the tower of the Sint-Bonifatiuskerk in Leeuwarden, which had been designed by Cuypers a few years earlier.
