The port of Oudeschild, built in 1780, first served oyster fishing, later for mussel and weed fishing. Until about 1930, weed was mined, including for mattress fillings.
A new, larger port for shrimp fishing was built in 1958 and some industry has been established in the vicinity.
Oudeschild is also the home port of the Texel North Sea cutters. On weekends these are moored in the fishing port.
