Oudeschild and harbour

Description

History:
Oudeschild (Tessels: Skil) is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. The village has about 1,410 inhabitants. Oudeschild is a village that is located on the east side of the Dutch wadden island Texel. The village is located extensively behind the high delta dike.
In the 17th century, Oudeschild was a village of international significance thanks to the Rede van Texel. Many VOC ships departed from here. The village then experienced a heyday, partly because the ships on Texel stocked up on provisions. In the period before that, the village was still called 't Schilt.
The most important sights in Oudeschild are the De Ruyterstraat, a kilometer long street with old facades, the white historic church and the monumental mill De Traanroeier. The Maritime &Beachcombing Museum is located in the village with themes about the maritime past and present of Oudeschild.
Just outside the village center are the Wezenputten and the Texelse Bierbrouwerij.

Port:
The only usable port of Texel is in Oudeschild, on the east side of the island. The harbour at De Cocksdorp is small and shallow and only suitable as a safe haven. Just south of this is the narrow harbour entrance. Due to the strong cross-current, it is difficult to run during the tide. It is also home to the fleet of Texel North Sea cutters. On weekends these are moored in the fishing port. After entering, the Zuiderhaven and Noorderhaven are the berths for commercial shipping and the brown fleet. Starboard you arrive via the working port first at the association port and then at the passer-by port of the WV Texel. The port has 250 berths and all facilities, such as shore power, sanitary facilities and washing machines. There is also a shop for the basic necessities, sheep cheese and Texel beer are available in the vicinity of the makers. The port keeps enough water for keelboats at low tide.
There are plans to change the port in the future. Although there has been talk for some time of a possible denomination in the dike opposite the Heemskerckstraat, there is also another plan that foresees a much more drastic separation between inland port and outer port, whereby the former must be protected by means of lock gates.
