The Spaarndammerstraat was named by council decision of 20 November 1878 after the village of Spaarndam and former municipality on the Noorder Buiten Spaarne.
The street officially starts at the Houtmankade, then runs west for a while and then turns northwest to Spaarndammerdijk/Tasmanstraat. She scoffs at that curvature the Domela Nieuwenhuisplantsoen. From a traffic point of view, the main route of the street is from the Spaarndammerspoorbrug to the Spaarndammerdijk/Tasmanstraat.
