What we know today as the place Schiphol has shifted a few kilometers over the centuries. 't Schipholl is first mentioned in 1447. The meaning of Schipholl is a low-lying country where branches are cut. "Scip" is cut off branch. 't Schipholl consisted and consists of the lakes the Kleine Poel, the area around the Zwarte Pad, the riparian reserve and the polder of Sloothaak with the former city nursery.
