The name of this brewery refers to a vanished village in North Beveland (the village of Emelisse, which, like many other Zeeland villages, was wiped off the map during the St. Elizabeth's Flood in 1532). In the old vanished village of Emelisse, there used to be a Cistercian abbey. The building of the Emelisse brewery is hyper-modern but radiates that same abbey atmosphere from the past. It is a relatively new young brewery, but they have an incredibly rich and contemporary range of beers and have frequently won awards with many of these beers. They have, among others, bock beer, abbey beer, cherry beer, pilsner, wheat beer, winter beer, and a whole bunch of specialty beers such as various stouts and IPAs, barley wine, smoked porter, and rauchbier. You can buy them all to take home or taste them on-site in the grand café, where you can also enjoy a delicious snack. They take pride in working with lots of fresh ingredients from their own region and can serve you a perfectly matching beer from their own house. Every Saturday from 3:30 PM, you can join a guided tour for 8 euros, which ends with 3 tasting glasses and a bit of finger food.
BeerExperience tip: venture out into the Kamperland polder and soak up the atmosphere of the Zeeland polder landscape and admire the natural beauty that has now taken the place of the old villages.
From the parking lot in front of the brewery, the Kamperland Nature Trail (5.2 km) begins; you can download the description at http://www.routebureauzeeland.nl/cmslib/www.routebureauzeeland.nl/routes/files/KAMPERLAND.pdf
