"The Prince of Orange" Bredevoort

The Prins van Oranje is a windmill that was built in 1870 at Landstraat 32-34 in the Dutch city of Bredevoort. It is a round stone flour mill with a roofing felt covered hood for grinding grain. The mill stands on a belt of 3.5 meters high, but underneath is also the six-meter high Bastion Welgemoed that was once part of the fortifications of Bredevoort. Around 1644/45 the Prince of Orange, as lord of Bredevoort, granted permission for the construction of a post mill on Welgemoed, a bastion that was part of the fortifications of Bredevoort. The current mill was built on the same site in 1870, after the post mill burned down in 1869. The construction of this mill took longer than usual, because the German masons had to serve as soldiers in the Franco-Prussian war. The mill was restored for the first time in 1968 and again in 1991 and 1992 because of the technical part. After a break of the riveted inner rod, the current rods of Vaags were installed. During this second restoration, a second belt door was also installed in the same place as before. The mill has a pair of grinding stones with blue stones and a pair of 17er artificial stones. Hatch: trailing hatch on track wheel. The rods from 1992 are 25.00 m long. The mill has a Flemish drum catch and pawl. The shaft is of unknown year and number and was made by the iron foundry the Prince of Orange with a length of 5.10 meters.
