Church Heukelum

Beschrijving

Originally established as R.C. Mariakerk. Since around 1573, the church building has been owned by and used by the Reformed congregation of Heukelum, and the history of the building is connected to the history of that congregation. All things considered, the congregation of Heukelum can reflect on an almost thousand-year history full of fascinating, tumultuous, and sometimes dramatic events.

The year 1699 became a disaster year for the church. In that year, the church was struck by a terrible storm and was largely destroyed by fire.

Until 1699, the church had a tall, beautiful tower. It is estimated that the base was about 10 by 10 meters. The height of the tower must have been at least 60 meters. In terms of shape and execution, it could be compared to the Sint Janstoren in Gorinchem. After this disaster, the church was partially rebuilt.

After the restoration, a new small bell was hung in the tower. The large bell, which had fallen during the fire, was also hung again. After it was found that there was a crack in this bell, it was recast and replaced in 1758.

However, in 1772, it happened again. Once more, the tower was engulfed in flames, and all the costs incurred were in vain. The large bell was severely damaged! The tower was restored again, but was a bit shorter than before.

In 1799, the tower became the property of the civil municipality. However, the municipality had a debt of fl.8,000.00 and decided to sell the tower for demolition. The sale took place on March 12, 1829. The tower, bell, and clock brought in a total of fl.4,500.00. The consequences of demolishing the historic structure were soon felt. The municipality now had to do without a bell and clock. At that time, a great inconvenience! Thirty years later, in 1859, this problem was solved, and a new tower (small) was placed.

Around 1728, an extension was added to the church. A wooden portal was also built on the north side. The windows on the west side of the extension were probably bricked up after the organ was installed in 1779. This is how the church received its current shape.

The portal on the north side of the church dates from 1966 and is built in 18th-century style. Previously, this was a wooden portal.
