Heukelum is first mentioned in a document from 996. It obtained city rights after the wall was completed in 1230.
In 1772, 36 of the approximately 100 wooden houses were lost in a major city fire.
Merckenburg Castle in Heukelum still stands on the site of a castle of the same name as early as 1230.
The old city walls lie under the grass-covered embankments around the city bordered by a moat.
