Description

Geijsteren is a village in the municipality of Venray, located along the Maas in the north of Limburg, bordering the province of North Brabant. Until 1969 it was part of the former municipality of Wanssum, then of the former municipality of Meerlo-Wanssum. Since 2010 it has belonged to the municipality of Venray.Geijsteren first belonged to the Lords Van Cuijk, who eventually sold their entire area to the Counts of Guelders. In 1236 an Arnoldus van Gesserne is mentioned as lord of Geijsteren. He was probably the first lord appointed on behalf of the Count of Guelders, after which he was succeeded by his relatives. The village itself is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1251. After all, together with the rest of present-day North Limburg, it belonged to the Overkwartier of Guelders. From around 1350 until the 16th century, it belonged to the Van Broeckhuysen family, then to the Van Harff, Van Eyll and Schellaert van Obbendorf families. Finally, in 1804, the land came to the baronial family De Weichs de Wenne, who still own the estate and the ruins. Incidentally, it had two lords from 1451 to 1592 due to inheritance issues. Because it was its own seigneury, it had a bench of aldermen. During the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703, the area was occupied by Prussian troops, and so it remained German as part of Prussian Upper Guelders for about a century. In 1794 the area was conquered by the French. In 1798, the seigneurial rights and aldermen's benches were abolished by the French and replaced by other forms of government. With the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Geijsteren became part of this. During the Belgian struggle for independence, however, this area chose to join Belgium and came to the German Confederation via the peace treaty of London in 1839, which it left in 1866. Since that time, Geijsteren has been permanently located in the Netherlands.
