Protected Village View Gees

Gees is a village with 615 inhabitants in the municipality of Coevorden, province of Drenthe. In 2008, Gees celebrated its 800th anniversary. Gees is a esdorp (a type of village in the Netherlands), which is still evident from the many Saxon farms. The marke of Gees is characterized on one hand by large ash trees and greenlands along the Geeserstroom, which will be re-meandered in the coming years. However, half of the village area is occupied by the forests and heathlands of the 1600 ha large Boswachterij Gees. These forests were planted in the 1930s on the heathlands. However, with the Hooge Stoep, a large heathland has been preserved.

A part of the village east of the Dorpsstraat, the main road, is a protected village view. Furthermore, Gees has very little new construction and has managed to retain its original character well. The procedure for designating the protected village view was initiated on December 7, 1964. The area was officially designated on July 12, 1967. The protected view covers an area of 7.8 hectares. Buildings within a protected view do not automatically receive the status of a protected monument. However, the municipality will adapt the zoning plan to regulate new developments in the area. The view protection focuses on the urban planning and cultural-historical appreciation of an area and aims to ensure its future functioning.
