Scheulder was founded in the Middle Ages. It belonged to the Free Kingdom of Wijlre, to form its own municipality in 1794. In 1982 it was merged into the then newly formed municipalities of Gulpen and Margraten. As a result, Scheulder joined Margraten. Since 1 January 2011 it is part of the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten.
