The village of Aalden consists of two parts, separated by the main road; Aelderstraat. On one side of the road lies Oud-Aalden, the old esdorp that is entirely made up of Saxon farms and designated as a protected village view. On the other side of the road are the new residential areas of the village. The adjacent village Zweeloo with the (Van Gogh) church connects to the new development and is only separated by the Aelderstroom or Westerstroom.
