Description

Erichem () is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The village traditionally belonged to the town of Buren together with the village of Asch and has been part of the municipality of the same name since 1811. It has 510 inhabitants. Since the 1950s, there has been a public primary school in Erichem called the Chestnut Gate. As of the 2017-2018 school season, it has merged with OBS De Daverhof van Kerk-Avezaath, whereby the function of the school building in Erichem has ceased to exist.

'De Kortenhof' is a monumental Gelderland T-farm centrally located in the beautiful Betuwe landscape and on the outskirts of the village of Erichem.

St. George's Church is a church building in the village of Erichem. On the north side of the church is a small cemetery. The church is used by the Protestant Regional Congregation 'Lingestreek'. 'De Kortenhof' has existed since 1830, although the farm has also been seen on an old map from 1826. The buildings include a traditional front and back house (the Deel with overhang) in the shape of the letter T, the tool shed, the old potato store, 'Didi's barn' and the 'Coach House'. There used to be horses and cows in the back of the house and hay and straw were stored in the attic. The Kortenhof is also listed on the monument website.

The Kortenhof, outbuildings and orchards The Kortenhof comprises the buildings. The farm has an 'overtuin', which is located on the other side of the street, as well as a plum orchard, called 'Gijsbertushof'. Next to the barns is a toad pool. Farm 'De Kortenhof' is located on the edge of the built-up area of Erichem. Opposite the farm is the reformed St. George's church and the presbytery.

A document shows that there was already a church in Erichem in 1101. In that year, the bishop of Utrecht, Burchard, donated the church to the chapter of St. Mary's Church in Utrecht. The oldest part of the current church – the tuff substructure of the tower – dates from the second half of the 13th century.

The church functioned as the mother church for the churches of Asch and Buren. When the Lady Chapel of Buren was elevated to the status of a parish church in 1395, measures were taken to protect the church of Erichem from financial problems. The roof was renewed in 1611. From the Reformation until 1623, the parish was merged with that of Buren. From 1634 to 1645 the parishes of Erichem and Asch were combined.

The church was built on a probably artificially raised site. The partly enclosed tower consists of three sections, the lower one of which is made of recycled tuff. This is also the oldest part of the church and dates from the second half of the 13th century. The second section is made of bricks; The third section consists of demolition material that has been sloppily bricked. These two sections were added in the 14th century. The bell was cast around 1450 by William Butendiic.

The single-aisled nave was built in the late 15th or early 16th century. According to a commemorative stone in the cornice, the roof was renewed in 1611.
