Vierhouten is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is located on the Veluwe, between Elspeet, Nunspeet and Vaassen. Vierhouten has 700 inhabitants. Vierhouten used to be called Vierholten. The name is said to refer to the four forests that surround the village. These would be the Vierhouterbos, the Vreebos, the Elspeterbos and the Gortelsebos. Although the correctness of the theory is doubted, it is the most widely used. Another theory is that the name comes from the Nunspeter family Vierholt. However, it is more likely that this family was named after the place and not the other way around.
