Fort Kijkuit was built around 1845 and is one of the many forts in this region of the New Dutch Waterline. This area could be flooded (called inundation) in times of war threat to hinder the enemy's passage. Through an ingenious system of sluices, about 50 cm of water would flow over the meadows during a war threat. This made the water too deep to cross with horses or cannons, but not deep enough for sailing. Moreover, ditches and roads became invisible, causing the enemy to become disoriented. The weak points at strategic locations such as an intersection, lock, or canal were defended with a fort, such as Fort Kijkuit. This fort is now managed by Natuurmonumenten and is not accessible.
