Like almost all forts, Fort Kijkuit was built in multiple phases, with continuous adjustments to changing warfare technology and improved weapons. The first phase dates from 1844-1847. The Kleizuwe was then still the only land connection to the east, making it an important access point in the Waterline. In the historical photo from 1933, there is no Provincial road and no Hilversum canal, which would only be constructed a few years later.
After that, the brick fort was reinforced by the construction of a modern casemate of reinforced concrete, intended for the installation of a machine gun and a cannon. It is a rare casemate, not only because of its multiple levels but also due to a steel front. This front was made from armor plates of the former naval ship H.M. Tromp.
Within the walls and the fort moat stood various buildings, each with their own function: guarding, accommodation for the 50 personnel, or storage of weapons and ammunition.
Like many other forts, this fort has a new function: it was restored in 2015 by Natuurmonumenten and set up as an office for the management unit Vechtplassen.
Tip: The fort grounds are open from Monday to Thursday between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Visit the interesting information room and climb the stairs to the lookout point over the inundated area of Horstermeer.
Route: Turn left and follow Gabrielweg.
