Oude Haven: De Aveling

The eighteenth century was a century of building large houses offering reception spaces and lounges. Many of the houses in Port Vell (Oude Haven) are representative of this time when houses were expanded by constructing adjacent buildings. The construction never ignored the need for cornice decoration in order to give experience. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries these majestic houses passed into public and private hands, in the name of ministries or banks and large companies. A great example today visitable is 55 Oude Haven, which today is a Bed & Breakfast called Stadspaleis De Aveling, Aveling City Palace. If you look closely you will find an inscription on the entrance that reads: Aveling "a strip of land along a dike because by force of the it would remain intact.
