Laren (Achterhoeks: Loarne or Laorne, opinions are divided) is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Laren had 1,730 inhabitants in 2010[1]; it was an independent municipality until 1 August 1971, which also included the village of Barchem. In 1854 the municipality of Verwolde was added to Laren. Laren has been mentioned in documents since 1294/95. Around 1650 it received a chapel, which was replaced in 1835 by a water management church in neoclassical style. Laren is known for its many estates and associated castles and country houses. Around the village are Oolde, Verwolde and Ampsen. Huis Verwolde is set up as a museum. The estate around this house also houses the thickest oak in the Netherlands, with a circumference of more than 7.5 meters. This tree is aptly named "Fat Tree".
