Nijenrode Castle
Nijenrode was built in 1250 by Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel, whose father owned the Ruwiel castle further up the Aa river. The fortified residential tower was named Nijen Rode, which means 'new reclamation'. It has been expanded and remodeled over the centuries. This castle also went up in flames during the disaster year, but it was completely restored to its original state. A well-known owner was the art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, who used Nijenrode from 1930 to 1940 as a showroom for his large collection of old masters. During the war, the castle and the collection were involuntarily sold to the Germans. In recent years, various works from the 'Goudstikker' collection have returned to the heirs, which is regularly covered in the press. Since 1946, the castle has housed a university, the only private university in the Netherlands, Nyenrode Business University. It was established by Dutch captains of industry from internationally oriented companies like KLM, Unilever, Shell, Philips, and Akzo as an international economic education. In the beautiful 56-hectare park of this National Monument, there are the lecture halls and the student campus. The nice wooden shed by the water belongs to the student rowing association. They still regularly row on the Vecht.
