The nature reserve of Hulshorsterzand can also be called Tinbergen-land. Nikolaas (Niko) Tinbergen is a world-famous Dutch ethologist, who has mainly focused on the behavior of animals in his life. This was a completely new branch of biology at the time, so he is seen as one of the founders of ethology (behavioral theory). In 1973 he received a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins was trained at Oxford by Tinbergen, among others. Tinbergen regularly walked around Hulhorst and did research on animals.
