Sand drift Hulshorsterzand

Description

The sand drift arose when the large moors had only such a thin layer of plant cover due to overgrazing, too often plagging and burning that they were kicked open by the sheep's legs. Where the sand was exposed and the wind got a grip on it, the sand began to drift.
Heather plants that were covered by it died and could no longer hold their ground. Over time, large deserts arose on the Veluwe. This has been fought against in all sorts of ways. However, most of the ways were ineffective. It was not until the end of 1900 that staatsbosbeheer intervened and made it possible to plant the sandy plains to a large extent with Scots pines.

That is a tree species that sometimes wants to grow on a poor sandy soil. Afterwards, it was also realized that a sand drift can also be a fascinating natural monument. It is a habitat for very special plants and animals
