The church is part of the Top 100 of Dutch UNESCO monuments.
The Great or St. Bavo Church is the largest church in Haarlem, located at the Grote Markt. It is dedicated to St. Bavo. The medieval cross church (construction period: 1370-1520) stands in the middle of the old city center and is built in the Gothic architectural style.
At the center of the church building stands a wooden, lead-covered, late Gothic crossing tower that is over 75 meters high.
The church was originally built as a Catholic church. In 1559, the church became the cathedral of the newly established diocese of Haarlem, until the church became a Protestant place of worship after the Reformation.
