The sheltered, warm southern slope of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lent itself perfectly to growing tobacco. From the seventeenth century, tobacco cultivation developed around Amerongen and Elst. In 1853, the Ruys family founded the Plantage Willem III on this spot. After 1900, the sales of tobacco went downhill, partly because of the increased import of tobacco from warmer regions, such as the Dutch East Indies. Later, fruit was still grown on the plantation. Since 1995, the Utrechts Landschap has owned the area and new nature has been developed. The grounds are grazed by Konik's horses and Galloway cattle. Under the N225, south of the plantation, a game change has been constructed, allowing animals to reach the floodplains of the Rhine.
