The literary work Mariken van Nieumeghen, part of the Flemish Canon, takes place in various concrete locations that play an important role in the course of the story. Venlo is the main location in the story. Here, Mariken initially lives with her uncle Gijsbrecht, who is a priest. This is the safe haven for Mariken before she is sent out. Venlo is referred to in various sources as her place of residence at the beginning of the story. Mariken is sent by her uncle from the surrounding countryside to Nijmegen for groceries. Here her trial begins and she meets the devil in the city. Nijmegen remains a recurring location, among other things as the place where a mystery play brings Mariken to repentance.
