The Savelsbos is located on a steep slope or a terrace edge. The hilly landscape formed millions of years ago has gradually been eroded by rivers like the Maas, brooks, and meltwater. The water flowing down from the plateau led to the formation of the dry valleys, which are called 'grubben' in Limburg. Archaeologically, the Savelsbos is valuable due to the presence of a specific type of rock, the flint nodules. In the last century, workshops of prehistoric flint workers have been discovered. About 4000 years ago, there must have been a large flint industry here. The ground was strewn with flint splinters, waste from making axes, knives, and spearheads. When you carefully examine the rock in a marl quarry, you can see the flint nodules in the chalk.
