Drouwenerzand

The Drouwenerzand is a nature reserve with drifting sands, largely located in the Dutch municipality of Borger-Odoorn and partially in the municipality of Aa en Hunze. It is a Natura 2000 area and was designated as a geological monument in 2009.

Between Drouwen and Gasselte, on the Hondsrug, lies the nature reserve “Het Drouwenerzand”. The drifting sand area has developed over time due to overgrazing, the cutting of heather sods, and the excavation of boulders. The Drenthe writer Harm Tiesing called “Het Drouwenerzand" a formidable natural phenomenon. Until the early 20th century, the road between Gasselte and Drouwen was regularly buried under the drifting sand and was barely passable.

The area is accessible for dogs.
